Born in Colorado, Ms. Herman spent a few years in Colorado and California growing up. However, her family eventually moved back to Oregon, where she grew up on a Christmas tree farm surrounded by the outdoors and family. Upon graduating high school, Ms. Herman moved back to Colorado for her undergraduate studies at the University of Denver. She quickly fell in love with Colorado and lived in Denver for most of the last 18 years before joining The Corvallis Clinic.
Following her undergraduate studies, Ms. Herman spent time living in a commune in Hawaii and learned about the raw food movement, subsistence living, and regenerative farming. She traveled during her schooling and career, including studying abroad in Austria and spending a summer living in Costa Rica. Ms. Herman also worked as a Montessori teacher before transitioning to social work. She feels the values formed through her Montessori training and work strongly inform how she approaches social work and support her ability to show up and hold space for people.
Upon receiving her Master of Social Work (MSW) degree, Ms. Herman worked at a Denver hospital as a clinician on the behavioral health team. She worked primarily in the emergency department, providing psychiatric assessments and treatment planning for those in psychiatric distress. She also provided consultation services to patients throughout the hospital. This marrying of social work and health care became a passion and has grown deeper over time. Ms. Herman said, “Creating a healthcare system that honors the whole health of an individual, including their mental health, is crucial to individual and systemic health. The connection between mental and physical health is undeniable and needs effectively informed tending- a service integrated behavioral health provides. I thrive working in collaboration, and integrated behavioral health allows collaboration between all members of a treatment team and the patient.”
Ms. Herman describes her practice as providing a trauma-informed space rooted in anti-racist practices. “I am on a continuous path of learning. Therefore the representation of these tenets will evolve as my learning and understanding does,” Ms. Herman relayed. Her work in a sizable, urban hospital provided her countless opportunities to work with patients from various backgrounds, representing multiple races and ethnicities. “I am honored to have worked with the individuals I did; it continues to inform my practice and my ability and approach to holding space.”
The brief nature of integrated behavioral health treatment highlights a couple of critical elements of treatment for Ms. Herman:
- A strong rapport between provider and patient
- Willingness from both patient and provider to explore skills and behavior change in a safe space, challenging current patterns of thinking and behaving that no longer serve them
“Setting goals to track the progress of our work together will be imperative, and grounding in a values-based motivation for treatment will continue to drive it. I want my patients to walk away from our work together with a sense of willingness and preparedness to take steps that may have felt too overwhelming or disconnected prior.”
Outside of patient care, Ms. Herman loves throwing pottery and being outdoors. She has a strong passion for gardening and subsistence living and finds joy in cooking and creating delicious dishes. Spending time with family and friends is always a priority, as well as being a student of life and her work.
