John “Steve” Thompson, M.D., has joined The Corvallis Clinic Rheumatology Department. He takes appointments by referral. For information, call 541-754-1371.
Dr. Thompson treats common rheumatology conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), gout, lupus, and osteoarthritis. He also has a special interest in diagnosing and caring for people who have such rare diseases as eosinophilia fasciitis and polymyositis.
Certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Thompson comes to The Clinic after practicing seven years at University of Colorado Health, Northern Colorado, from 2010 to 2018. He has also practiced at the Arthritis Center of the Rockies/Greeley Medical Clinic, in Greeley, CO, from 2003 to 2010; the Aspen Medical Center/Big Thompson Medical Group, in Loveland, CO, from 1991 to 2003; and Southern California Permanente Medical Group, in Bellflower, CA, from 1989 to 1991.
In addition to a career caring for people with common rheumatologic conditions, Dr. Thompson is especially gratified when he diagnoses and treats rare conditions. “I diagnosed and treated a person with a very rare disease called Whipple’s disease early in my career based on newly published and very distinctive neuro-ocular symptoms.” More recently he diagnosed and treated two people for eosinophilia fasciitis.
Dr. Thompson sees medical care as a “collaboration between the doctor and patient.” He strives to be compassionate and understanding, and he believes patients would describe him as “quiet but attentive, thorough and caring.”
He and his wife have two grown sons, and he enjoys hiking, biking, birding, reading and family.
