CORVALLIS — The Corvallis Clinic Clinical Research Center is again involved in a research study aimed to help researchers find a way to slow the Alzheimer’s disease process.
The center is currently seeking volunteers as part of The Amaranth Study, which is looking for 2200 participants throughout the world. To be eligible, participants must meet the following criteria:
- Be between 55-85 years old
- Have a diagnosis of mild Alzheimer’s disease or mild cognitive impairment or have experienced gradual and progressive change in memory function over more than six months.
- Must have a friend, relative or caregiver who is willing to be a study partner for the duration of the study.  A study partner is defined as someone who is in regular contact with the patient and who will be available to attend study visits and provide input on the patient’s mental functioning.
A screening tool to assess potential study eligibility is available online at www.theamaranthstudy.com.
Note: This study is not an Alzheimer’s prevention study.
Research procedures involve a once-daily investigational drug tablet, along with 20 study visits over a two-year period at the Clinical Research Center offices located on the third floor of The Corvallis Clinic Asbury Building, 3680 NW Samaritan Drive.  Visits are every one to three weeks the first two months and then every six to seven weeks for the remainder of the study. Subjects will receive a stipend intended to cover travel costs.
Richard Lafrance, M.D, a neurologist who retired from The Clinic in 2013 and is a part-time neurohospitalist, is the study’s principal investigator. Dr. Alex Wang, a Clinic neurologist, is working with Dr. Lafrance on this study. Dr. Lafrance was the principal investigator in a similar study in which the center was involved, the Expedition 3 Study.
