When Bobby Rangel had a titanium plate placed in his right clavicle after a snow-boarding accident, he had no idea it would come back to haunt him five years later.
The 27-year-old beer brewer began experiencing skin discomfort in a small section around his right shoulder. The trouble spot was initially treated as a cyst, but when the discomfort persisted the cyst diagnosis was ruled out.
It turned out an external film on the plate had resulted in an infection. He was referred to Dr. Jonathan Evans, but Rangel wanted to give antibiotics a try first. When that didn’t work, Dr. Evans confirmed that it was not a cyst and that the infection was caused by the plate, which needed to be removed.
“My experience with Dr. Evans and the Surgery Center was very positive,” Rangel said. “The surgery went much more quickly than I anticipated. I was treated very well by the nurses and everyone made me very comfortable.”
He said his recovery has been “excellent” and that he has bounced back much quicker than his previous shoulder surgery. And, that means he can enjoy his favorite activities when not brewing beer, which are indoor rock climbing, bike riding and occasionally … snowboarding.
