CORVALLIS — The Oregon Patient Safety Commission has recognized The Corvallis Clinic Surgery Center for its transparency and commitment to patient safety by exceeding the Patient Safety Reporting Program’s recognition targets for 2014.
The center is one of only five of the 58 ambulatory surgery centers participating in the state program that have exceeded the targets.
“I would like to especially recognize Registered Nurse Krista Bass,” said Nancy Franssen, RN, director of the Surgery Center. “She has taken the lead as our infection control nurse. We are very lucky to have her as a team member at The Surgery Center. She is excited about the challenge to excel in infection control and recognition of potential risks.”
Facilities that “exceed” targets consistently perform event investigations, develop system-level action plans, and submit quality and timely reports that promote shared learning. Targets help ensure that the Patient Safety Commission receives enough adverse event reports to build a strong database of quality reports for the shared learning among health-care facilities.
Meeting or exceeding targets does not mean that a facility experiences more adverse events than others, according to the commission. Rather, it shows the facility follows these quality attributes:
- Dedication: A desire to keep patients safe
- Learning: A commitment to investigate what went wrong and identify possible solution
- Transparency: A willingness to share what went wrong with patients and other facilities
- Improvement: A drive to make the changes needed to prevent patient harm in the future
The center received its recognition at the Patient Safety Breakfast and Development Day at the Salem Convention Center in February.
