Cara Wheeler, Psy.D, will be providing integrative behavioral services by referral for patients of Corvallis Clinic primary-care providers at The Corvallis Clinic at Waverly Drive in Albany, starting in early December.
For information call 541-967-8221.
A licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Wheeler’s role as an integrated behaviorist is to work with patients and their primary-care providers to treat thoughts and behaviors that may be affecting overall health. She treats people from 2 years old on up to seniors and has special training in eating-disorder recovery.
Prior to The Clinic, Dr. Wheeler practiced at Beach Counseling Center in Panama City Beach, Fla., since 2014. She also worked at Emerald Coast Psychology from 2010 to 2014 and at Salus Behavioral Health from 2012 to 2013, both in Panama City, Fla., and at Canopy Cove and Health Management Institute in Tallahassee, Fla., from 2008 to 2010.
Dr. Wheeler earned her Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology from Regent University in Virginia Beach, Va., in 2008 and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 2004.
“Psychology found me, and I put it on like a favorite pair of jeans that had gotten lost in the closet,” she said of what was merely a minor field of study while she pursued a pre-medical degree but what eventually became her passion. She said her patients would describe her as approachable and warm. “I can identify with people from all walks of life knowing that being human is an imperfect state.”
Dr. Wheeler said the patient “is always the expert on themselves” and that she has a skill set and knowledge base that can help the patient see things in a new way or learn how to interpret their experiences. “My approach is collaborative, and I am not satisfied until progress is being made. I ensure that the patient has a comprehensive diagnosis and then guide them towards feeling better through various avenues of treatment.”
Outside her practice, Dr. Wheeler loves to “explore the world” with her family. She enjoys arts and crafts and is learning to have a green thumb. “Also, as a mommy, I love engaging in learning activities and play.”
