The Clinical Research Center is active in many diverse clinical areas. A sampling of research topics includes allergy (grass pollen, dust mites), neurology (Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis), sleep (apnea, restless legs syndrome), pulmonary medicine (COPD) and women’s health (pre-eclampsia, fibroids).
It often happens that once a study is completed in a particular clinical area, several months to a year may passbefore we work on another study in that same clinical area. However, there is one clinical area where our research group is almost always active – type 2 diabetes.
The Clinical Research Center has worked on every new class of drug for type 2 diabetes treatment that has been introduced in last 10 years. The participation of our patient volunteers in these studies has contributed to making several new drug options available for patients with type 2 diabetes, including the well-known drugs Januvia and Bydureon. You can find an update on type 2 diabetes drugs that are under development by clicking here.
The Clinical Research Center is currently seeking patients for one type 2 diabetes research study and will soon begin a second. More diabetes treatment studies are expected to start in the first half of 2014. The first study is for type 2 diabetes patients who are using metformin but are not achieving sufficient blood-sugar control on metformin alone. The second study will compare an investigational once-weekly injectable treatment with a commercially available once-weekly injectable treatment in those taking 1 or 2 oral drugs to treat their diabetes but are not achieving sufficient blood-sugar control. Both studies have the common goal to evaluate potential new drugs to achieve better treatments for blood-sugar control while experiencing fewer side effects.
We invite those interested in diabetes information to attend The Corvallis Clinic Diabetes Fair in the lobby of the Asbury Building, 3680 NW Samaritan Drive, on Thursday, November 7, from noon until 7 p.m. A Clinical Research Center employee will be available for questions.
