BLACK TO JOIN THE CORVALLIS CLINIC’S PHILOMATH FAMILY MEDICINE
CORVALLIS — Curtis Black, M.D., will join The Corvallis Clinic’s Philomath Family Medicine on July 28. He can be reached at 541-750-6208.
Dr. Black was Chief of Obstetrics and Director of Emergency Services at San Juan Hospital and Clinics in Monticello, Utah, where he also had a full-scope family medicine practice. He is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.
He definitively decided to pursue medicine at the tender age of 5, when he was in awe over a physician stitching him up and comforting him after an accident. He said after that “anytime anyone would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up my response was always the same, ‘I want to be a doctor!’”
While in medical school, he planned to become an ophthalmologist, but realized he loved almost every area of medicine and figured the best fit was to become a family physician. “I have loved my decision and look forward every day to helping people in every stage of life … The trust people put in me to help them at the most vulnerable times in their lives is humbling to me, and demands my absolute best effort every time.”
Dr. Black earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, in 2004. He completed the McKay-Dee Family Medicine Residency program, Ogden, Utah, in 2007.
“I like to ‘chew the fat’ from time to time to get to know folks,” Dr. Black said of what patients can expect from him. “I like to get to know my patients before I get to know their medical problems.” He said he strives to form partnerships with patients to help guide them to better health. “I truly believe that putting the patient firmly in control of their own health is the most effective way to treat patients.”
Dr. Black and his wife, Kristin, have five children, with whom he loves playing basketball, soccer and volleyball. He said he and his family are “excited to explore Oregon’s trails, rivers, mountains and coast.”
He said he enjoys volunteering in church and community projects. He has also been a physician volunteer at a ski resort, a medical director for a triathlon, a sports team physician, and an instructor of an advanced wilderness life support course.
