CORVALLIS — Christy Rivers, D.O., has joined The Corvallis Clinic Pediatrics Department. She can be reached at 541-754-1278.
“When I went to medical school, the area I most enjoyed learning about was pediatrics,” Dr. Rivers said of her specialty. “Since medicine is a profession of lifelong learning, I thought it would be best to choose a patient population I love working with and a subject matter I love learning about.”
Prior to joining The Clinic, Dr. Rivers was a pediatric hospitalist for Legacy Health Systems at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis from 2011 to 2014 and was a general medical officer for the Navy from 2004 to 2008.
She received her medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, Calif., in 2003 and completed her pediatric residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y., in 2011. She is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.
Dr. Rivers takes a teamwork approach to her practice. “I have worked hard to learn a lot about medicine. But a parent knows his or her child far better than I ever will. If we combine these two skill sets, quite often we can figure out what is wrong with a patient and how best to make him feel better. … I have children of my own and try to treat every child I see with the same respect and kindness I try to offer my own kids.”
Dr. Rivers enjoys traveling and spent part of summer 2014 with her husband and two children studying Spanish in Peru. “I am hoping I will be able to converse well enough with Spanish speaking patients not to require a translator, she said. “If not, I will continue my studies here until I reach that goal.” She also enjoys hiking, is an avid reader, and volunteers her time at her children’s school and at her church.
And she acknowledges – and appreciates – the responsibility her position holds.
“I understand that parents are entrusting their children to me,” she said, “and I think of that as a very special gift.”
