Michele Saums, MD, was raised in a close-knit community in southeastern Connecticut and instilled with the value of helping others early on. Her love for science and an innate curiosity about the human body led her to pursue a healthcare career. After completing her medical education in Atlanta and residency training in Charleston, South Carolina, Dr. Saums decided to venture to the Pacific Northwest, drawn by her love for the outdoors and her husband’s aspiration to live in the region.
Her interest in obstetrics and gynecology grew unexpectedly during her clinical rotations in medical school. Driven by a desire to assist individuals during significant and private moments in their lives, she appreciates the field’s diverse advocacy opportunities and the balance of clinic, surgery, and labor and delivery. Among her interests in OB/GYN, she places particular importance on family planning.
With an approach to patient care rooted in empowerment, Dr. Saums emphasizes her commitment to enabling patients to control their health decisions. She explains, “I want to help patients take control of their life so they can make the right decisions for them.” Longitudinal care, in which she forms lasting connections with her patients, holds a special place in her heart, and she finds great fulfillment in knowing that she has positively impacted her patients’ lives.
Outside of her professional life, Dr. Saums nurtures a love for exploration, whether it be through outdoor activities, travel, immersing in diverse cultures, or savoring delicious cuisines.
