The Corvallis Clinic Clinical Research Center initiated involvement in the clinical trials for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine on November 17th, 2020. This participation helped get the vaccine to a national level of Emergency Use Authorization.
Now that the vaccine is available to the adult general public, the Clinical Research team had the honor of administering the first Johnson & Johnson vaccine given at The Corvallis Clinic to a community member. On May 18, this vaccine was given by Clinical Research Nurse Lisa Buchheit, who described her feelings as “Proud! My proudest moment in 20 years of Research”.
“It’s extremely rare that a clinical trial is done and then the treatment implemented in the same window of time. We are so proud of our clinical research team-members Lisa Buchheit, RN, Carlene Chen, BSN, RN, Kim Tally, LPN, Rich Tomasco, RN, Mae Dickason, LNP, Denny Conrad, Josh Borunda, and Sheena Strohmayer. Our team was at the forefront of this trial and vaccine research,” says Julie Carrico, Clinical Research Senior Associate Coordinator. Eighty community members participated in the Johnson & Johnson vaccine trial overseen by Internal Medicine providers and research investigators Michael Chen, MD and Brian Curtis, MD.
Previous vaccine studies at The Corvallis Clinic Clinical Research Center include those for Prevnar®13 (pneumonia), Shingrix® (shingles), Fluzone® High Dose (flu), and Menactra® (meningitis), among others. The Research Center has been the leading clinical trial site in the mid-Willamette Valley for all new classes of Type 2 Diabetes treatments and has also worked in allergy, asthma, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and women’s health. These trials show the medical and scientific community, including the FDA, what does and doesn’t work in humans.
