Post-operative Instructions after Vasovasostomy
Diet:
You may return to your normal diet immediately.
Activity:
Your physical activity should be restricted for the first 5 days. During that time you should be relatively inactive and avoid lifting anything greater than 10 pounds (a gallon of milk.) You may use an ice pack off and on for approximately 48 hours.
Do not engage in sexual intercourse or ejaculate for at least three weeks after surgery.
Bruising, small amounts of oozing from the incision, swelling, or tenderness of the scrotum are not unusual. Sometimes a knot is felt at the site for several months. This is a normal part of the healing process.
You will have a gauze dressing over the incision sites. Change the gauze daily for 3-4 days. Wear a jock strap (athletic support) for 7-10 days for support and comfort. It is highly recommended.
You may shower. No hot tubs, swimming, or tub baths for one week.
If stitches were placed they do not have to be removed. They will absorb by themselves, usually within 10 days.
Medication:
You should resume your medications unless we tell you otherwise
Use your prescribed pain medication as directed, but do not take additional Tylenol with it.
If the pain is not too bad and you do not need the narcotic, you may take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin.)
Problems you should report to us:
Fever greater than 100.5 degrees F
Moderate or severe swelling of the scrotum and /or bleeding
Reactions to medication (hives, rash, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea)

Since it takes over seventy days for sperm to develop, we usually do not perform the first post-operative sperm count until 10-12 weeks after surgery.
